' The first round of the
National Double fours competition saw Sevenoaks men drawn against the
strength of Civil service (Chatham) BC and in a low scoring game the
Sevenoaks team lost 31 - 42. Inspiration came from the four skipped by
Trevor Russell by winning 19 - 17 but the second rink, skipped by David
Henning saw them trailing 0 - 13 after only 6 ends and this lead
was maintained and increased by the Civil Service four to the end of the
game.

Keith Pearce, playing the Two-Wood singles got off to a good start by winning 16 shots to 4 closely followed by David Henning winning the singles 21 – 16 after a thrilling game. Each side won on one rink, with that skipped by Geraldine Manning winning by 25 shots to 15. On the second rink skipped by Joy Hyson they lost by 10 shots to 20 and as a result the match was tied, leaving both clubs with 3 points. Although the winning triple were always in control it took 4 shots on the last end to secure a tied match for the club in a very tense finish.
At the same venue Sevenoaks men
were also battling to come to terms with a much faster green than they are
used to playing on at Sevenoaks. In the early stages the two winning rinks
found themselves in arrears but steady bowling enabled the rink skipped by
John Dawes to take the lead on the fifteenth end for a final score of 24 shots
to 18. The other rink led by Ralph Aldred took the lead at the half-way stage
to win by 29 shots to 21. Sevenoaks looked as though they would secure a
further victory on the rink skipped by John Talbot leading up until
the fifteenth end, but with the opposition producing some excellent woods the
home side scored a further 12 shots without reply. On the remaining rink the
home side took control midway through the game and were comfortable winners by
28 shots to 14. The overall score favoured the home team by 10 shots and
gained them 6 points to Sevenoaks' 4.

Sevenoaks men visited
Maidstone Bowls Club in a Millennium Trophy knockout competition and enjoyed
an overall 103 shots to 94 success albeit that some senior players were unable
to take part. John Barnacle, in his first representative game for Sevenoaks,
conceded only 2 shots to his experienced opponent in losing 19-21. Strength
was shown by John Talbot in guiding his four (Stephen Strudwick, Ralph Aldred
& Michael Chapman) to a resounding 31-13 victory whilst David Lewington’s
triple (John Atkins & Eric Mitchell) maintained the pressure on the Maidstone
triple winining 27-17. Since the result of the match depended on getting the
best aggregate score the efforts of the Two-Wood singles and Pairs disciplines
was essential and whilst both of these games were lost (Mike McDonald –
Two-Wood, Trevor Seabrook & John Dawes – Pairs) they kept a close eye on the
scoreboard and did not give their opponents any chance of over-hauling the
lead that was earlier set by the Sevenoaks team.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The annual visit of Ditton B.C. to play both the ladies & men teams of Sevenoaks, in the Millenium League, resulted in a significant win for the men and a marginal loss for the ladies. In the ladies section Hilary Chapman regained the initiative after being 8-17 in arrears after 9 ends but aided by Peggy Mitchell and June Briley won all but three of the remaining ends to triumph 21 shots to 19. The second ladies team skipped by Geraldine Manning with Elaine Mason & Linda Wynn in support narrowly lost 13-15 having earlier gained a 12-6 lead after13 ends. Ditton won the game gaining 4 points to Sevenoaks 2 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Sevenoaks men, however, crushed Ditton’s team winning on all 4 rinks and securing the maximum of 12 points. The highest winning rink was skipped by Captain Eric Mitchell who along with John Atkins, Peter Haden Scott & Michael Chapman overwhelmed the opposition 26 shots to 11. Two tightly fought games resulting in single shot wins for Sevenoaks were skipped by John Dawes and Trevor Russell whilst Ralph Aldred and his team got through by 5 shots clinching an 81 shots to 59 win for Sevenoaks. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the latest friendly match against Knockholt B.C. a very closely contested match ended with each club winning on two rinks and with a tie on the remaining rink. For the home side Barbara Ide, Peter Haden-Scott and Sid Gamwells were the star performers winning by 26 shots to 11. The rink skipped by John Dawes along with June Briley and John Barnacle won a much closer encounter by just 2 shots (13-11). The rink which finished tied at 17 shots to both sides was extremely well contested, with the lead fluctuating first with one side and then the other. A single shot for the visitors on the last end brought to an end a facinating encounter. Heavy losses on the two remaining rinks meant that Knockholt were overall winners by 82 shots to Sevenoaks 76. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
