Trevor Russell, a former winner, was successful in the semi-final of the Kent 2 Wood competition and will play in the final to be held at Marden Bowling Club on 1st August 2009. On a sun baked surface Trevor and his opponent David Boast from Metropolitan Police B.C.found it difficult to find the right line on the green, however the game was very closely fought and brought about a dramatic conclusion. On the penultimate end Trevor had one shot for the match but was unable to take advantage and on the final end found himself two shots down. In spite of the pressure and calling on all his experience he was able to take the match with his last wood.

In the latest mens match, Sevenoaks were the winners against Petts Wood B.C. by just 5 shots. Although the visitors were successful on three of the five rinks, Sevenoaks' win was largely due to captain Alan Cockfield supported by Tom Ketchin and John Barnacle whose rink won by 30 shots to 7 shots. Sevenoaks Bowling Club Ladies Week provided some exciting and enjoyable bowling.  Sixteen ladies entered the two-wood competition and Hilary Chapman and Betty Redding won through to contest the final which will be played on Finals Day, Sunday 6th September.

The two-wood Plate finalists were Doris Chapman and Eve Tucker.  By the half-way stage, Doris had gained a 4 shot advantage.  However a winning run of 5 ends saw Eve take a 2 shot lead.  At this stage Doris fought back well and 4 shots gained over the last 3 ends gained victory for her by 2 shots.

Twelve ladies entered the Miller Cup Competition and Hilary Chapman and June Briley will contest the final which will also be played on Finals Day.

In one of the semi-finals of the Miller Cup Plate Betty Redding established a 5 shot lead but calling on all her experience Margaret Dawes levelled the match with just one end to play.  Betty held her nerve and managed to record one shot for victory.  In the other semi-final Peggy Mitchell and Doris Chapman were involved in another close encounter.  Doris established a 5 shot lead which was quickly wiped out but 2 shots scored over the last 2 ends were sufficient to win an exciting match.

Elaine Mason who only joined the Club last year reached the semi final of the Miller Cup.

Captain's Day finished off the week and 22 ladies including some social members attended and had lunch with the Captain, Barbara Ide.  After playing a fun pairs game refreshments were taken and this finished off a most successful Ladies Week.

In a mixed match against Caterham, Sevenoaks recorded a one shot victory. For this they were cleary indebted to Dave Hacker, Barbara Ide and skip David Lewington who ran out winners by 37 shots to 7 shots.  The only other winning rink was skipped by men's captain Mike McDonald.

Trevor Russell, a member of Sevenoaks Bowling Club, who previously won the Kent Two Wood Singles in 1996

again qualified for the final held at Marden B. C.

His opponent Alan Morton (Lenham) started the stronger and led by 7 shots to 1. In a two wood competition it is difficult to recover a large deficit but when he was 3 shots to nine down Trevor called on all his experience and with consistent bowling took a four shot lead with just five ends remaining. At this point his opponent briefly took charge to lead 15-14 by the nineteenth end. Amid growing tension the two players were level with just the last end to play. Alan trailed the jack with his wood finishing just two inches away and to the relief of his supporters Trevor, with his last wood managed to draw the winning shot.

Having qualified  through county competitions, Geraldine’s opponent in the first round of the National Finals Over-55 singles at Leamington Spa was Sue Harriott from Madeira B.C Devon.  When she stepped out on the green at 11.45 on Thursday 30th July, she did not know that Sue plays for England and Devon, and was in several other finals at Leamington (and had also been there many times before!). Being in Victoria Park, with 5 adjacent rinks and a host of dignatories from the KCWBA supporting her was, to say the least, quite daunting!

With such an opponent, the game was never going to be easy! After putting up a gallant fight, determined to get into double figures, Geraldine managed to score 12 shots, before being defeated 12-21. Sue went on to lose in the semi-finals.

Geraldine was presented with her medal by Diane Ingle, the Women’s President of Bowls England and as she said the whole experience was one she will never forget and will inspire her to improve her play so that she may return there one day soon!
